Veekee James Talks About Her Journey as a Fashion Designer

Veekee James Talks About Her Journey as a Fashion Designer

In an interview, Victoria James, a fashion designer and founder of Veekee James Company, discusses her path to becoming a fashion designer, her achievements, and other related topics.

Could you tell us about your journey as a fashion designer?

Growing up, I never planned to become a fashion designer. It was a decision I made later on. Initially, I wanted to be a make-up artist or a hairstylist. However, when I realized that many of my friends were already in those fields, I decided to try something new. That’s when I ventured into fashion designing.

How did you come up with the name Veekee James for your brand?

👉 For more insights, check out this resource.

I wanted a unique and international brand name, so I decided to combine my first and last name. I also prayed about it and chose to spell my first name differently by changing “Vicky” to “Veekee.”

What factors have contributed to your success in the industry?

👉 Discover more in this in-depth guide.

First and foremost, I attribute my success to the grace of God. He has played a significant role in everything I have achieved and in building my brand. Secondly, my drive for success has been instrumental. I have always had a strong desire to be successful, wealthy, and make a name for myself.

What challenges did you face in the early years of your career?

One of the greatest challenges I faced in the beginning was the location of my business. Initially, I was based on the mainland in Lagos, but later moved to the island. Finding skilled individuals to assist me was also a challenge. I started by doing most of the work myself and later had two assistants. However, as I gained more clients and received numerous orders, I struggled to find enough skilled hands to meet the demand.

Currently, one of the ongoing challenges is still the availability of skilled individuals. As my brand grows, so does the number of clients. Unfortunately, there are not many people who excel in the specific type of work I do. I have to make do with the limited skilled individuals available. Additionally, the current state of the country is a challenge as it impacts everyone doing business here.

Some designers create extravagant designs to gain attention. What is your approach to design?

I have never felt the need to create bizarre designs for the sake of seeking attention or trending. I believe that God has a way of showcasing my brand through my designs.

Do you think Nigerian fashion designers receive enough recognition for their work?

Although there has been improvement compared to when I first started, I still don’t think Nigerian fashion designers receive the credit they deserve. Nigerians are incredibly talented, and when I see their work, I am amazed. People outside the country value artists’ crafts differently. Additionally, there are events where fashion designers are celebrated, providing them with opportunities to showcase their brands. We need more of such platforms in our country.

The amount of effort and value we put into our designs is often underestimated. It is easier for designers outside the country because they have access to more resources. Furthermore, celebrities outside Nigeria proudly wear designs and credit the designers. In Nigeria, the designer’s name must be known before a celebrity will proudly endorse their work.

There is an assumption that celebrities should not repeat outfits in public. What are your thoughts on this?

It is a personal choice for celebrities to make. I don’t think it is wrong for popular figures to wear an outfit more than once. However, as a fashion designer, I prefer to showcase new designs each time. While some celebrities may wear the same design multiple times, they won’t photograph it again to give the impression that they never repeat outfits.

What are some of your achievements as a fashion designer?

I have received several awards for my work including the Best Designer Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2022. I was also recognized as the Bridal Fashion Designer Brand of the Year at the La Mode 2020 Award (Green October Event). In addition, I won the Fashion Stylist of the Year at the Sugar Awards in 2021 and the Wedding Dress Brand of the Year at the Sugar Awards in 2022. These awards are significant accomplishments for me.

Furthermore, I take pride in the fact that I have been able to inspire many young designers. It brings me joy to see my work appreciated and to have a positive influence on others.

You refer to yourself as a “daughter of Zion.” What is the story behind this name?

I gave myself this name during a challenging period in my business. I lost my Instagram business account four times in one month, despite having over 500,000 followers. It took me a week to recover the first time, and I continued to lose it three more times. It was a difficult experience, but through it, I realized the importance of social media. Each time I regained my account quickly, which surprised people. From that point on, I identified myself as a “daughter of Zion” and asked my followers to refer to me by that name. Fortunately, I haven’t lost my account since then. This happened towards the end of last year, and I pray it never happens again.

What sets your brand apart and ensures customer loyalty?

People recognize my dresses for their unique style, and there is a signature look associated with my brand. I believe this inspires customer loyalty. Additionally, I have built my brand on the foundation of God’s grace, and I always credit Him for my achievements. This helps maintain the reputation and position of my brand.

You have styled many top celebrities in Nigeria. How did you build relationships with them, and which celeb do you enjoy working with the most?

I have collaborated with numerous celebrities over the years. It is primarily a professional designer-to-customer relationship. I believe that good communication and mutual respect play a crucial role. Celebrities like Osas Ighodaro have been supportive and have contributed to the growth of my brand. Among them, I particularly enjoy working with Osas because of her unwavering support.

Some people argue that designer clothes are overpriced and similar quality can be found at lower prices. What are your thoughts on this?

I often receive such comments (laughs). The truth is, there is no secret behind the pricing. One cannot expect the same quality at a lower price. I don’t raise my prices without increasing the value. Consider the cost of the fabric and the intricate details involved in designing the clothes.

Have you ever felt that you could have done better with a particular outfit?

Never! Each design I create has its own significance and speaks for itself. Although my initial concept may evolve during the design process, I believe that is what makes me a designer. There isn’t a single dress that I have made and felt I could have improved.

How has the current state of the economy affected your business, and what do you think the government can do to help?

Like many other business owners, I am impacted by the rising fuel prices and the lack of consistent electricity supply. These are significant challenges. The government should address these issues and create a more favorable environment for conducting business.

What is the most expensive dress you have ever made for a client?

The most expensive dress I have created was for Osas for this year’s AMVCA.

What is the dress worth?

The dress is valued at $20,000.

Do you charge in dollars?

I accept payment in both dollars and naira. I have clients from outside the country as well.

Do you design clothes for average-income earners?

I create clothes for anyone who can afford my designs. I don’t categorize based on average or high income. People place value on different things, and I respect their preferences. Some may have a lot of money but don’t see the need to spend millions on a dress, while others save for months to afford a specific design. It’s ultimately based on individual choices.

Who are your industry inspirations or mentors?

While I don’t have a mentor in the traditional sense, there are a few individuals from whom I draw inspiration.

What are your most memorable moments as a fashion designer?

There are many, but the one that stands out is when I won the Best Designer Award at the AMVCA in 2022 for Osas Ighodaro’s outfit.

Was that when Osas approached you to design another dress for this year’s AMVCA?

Osas is my muse, and we had already discussed her dress for this year’s AMVCA even before last year’s event, unless circumstances change.

What do you do to maintain your beauty?

(Laughs) I prioritize drinking water and minding my own business.

Aside from your job, what other activities do you enjoy?

I find fulfillment in my ministry work at Zion Worship. It brings me immense joy.
